Balaurite

Balaurite is very rare mineral named after the dragons that create it. Balaur have a unique kind of magic that causes nearby ore to transform into a mineral known as balaurite. Balaurite can only form in a balaur’s lair, so it is incredibly rare and highly dangerous to mine. For example, if a red balaur’s lair contains silver ore, over time the radiant mana from the balaur will transform that silver ore into red balaurite. Items made from balaurite are extremely valuable and make up some of the most expensive weapons and jewelry in all of Tyrth.

Balaurite is more akin to a metal than a gemstone, so it is often used for blades and hilts and the chains of necklaces rather than being a flashy central stone. Balaurite is imbued with the magic of the balaur that created, causing objects made of balaurite to become permanently enchanted with magic. The exact magical effects depend on which balaur's lair it came from.
