Balaur are ancient beasts that have existed in Tyrth since the dawn of time. They live to be thousands of years old and are quite elusive. Since they are so long-lived, a balaur’s territory is often very well known and documented. It is also well known what that balaur’s temperament is like - as no two balaur are the same.

All balaur are highly intelligent and capable of speaking the human tongue. Each balaur in the world is completely unique, and usually has their very own moniker such as Ironpyre the Black Death. Some balaur are highly territorial and will destroy anyone they deem to be a trespasser, while others revel in adoration of humans, allowing humans into their territories in exchange for trinkets and offerings. Knowing which balaur you'll be dealing with and how they react to folks wandering into their lands is very important for surviving Tyrth’s wilderness.

Depending on the subspecies, they make their lairs in all manner of places - from mountain caves to ocean grottos. Balaur subspecies are categorized by colours: red, white, black, blue and so forth. Balaur have a unique kind of magic that causes nearby ore to transform into a mineral known as balaurite. Balaurite can only form in a balaur’s lair, so it is incredibly rare and incredibly dangerous to mine. For example, if a red balaur’s lair contains silver ore, over time the radiant mana from the balaur will transform that silver ore into red balaurite. Items made from balaurite are extremely valuable and make up some of the most expensive weapons and jewelry in all of Tyrth.
