Funeral Shrines
Funeral Shrines
The roots of the Whorl of Tyrth stretch all over the world. In areas where some of the largest roots have emerged from the earth, shrines are built that serve a sacred purpose. These holy temples are where fowldyr honor their dead, and perform a ceremony to return the dearly departed back to the Whorl.
These shrines contain carved stone altars under the arch of the roots. The body of a departed fowldyr is placed on the altar and an Aoire conducts a sacred ceremony to return the dearly departed's soul to the Artisan.
Aoire are acolytes of the Weaver, and serve as a living conduit for the Weavers magic. The gathered friends and loved ones sing a funeral hymn and the Aoire - calling upon the Weavers magic - weaves a shroud of white light out of the voices of the gathered mourners. The shroud of light completely envelops the body, and at the crescendo of the song the shining silhouette of the departed bursts into thousands of tiny dew drops suspended in the air. The sparkling pearls of light slowly rise until they meet the root canopy above, absorbing into the roots of the Whorl to join the great pool of energy that the Artisan draws upon when creating new fowldyr. In fowldyr culture, they believe that all of the energy that flows through the planet is cyclical, and that by returning their life force to the Whorl the Artisan will reshape it into a new fowldyr some day.
What happens to fowldyr vessels after a funeral?
A fowldyr can only die when they are in a mortal state, which means that their vessel is either broken or destroyed. In the event of a fowldyr's death, the broken vessel is often kept at the fowldyr's altar as a memorial. If the fowldyr doesn't have an altar, the remaining shards of their vessel may be gifted to close friends and beings they consider to be family as part of their last will and testament.
Fanatics & Reincarnation
There are some humans who follow fowldyr and their gods devoutly, and in some cases these humans who have dedicated their lives to the fowldyr may request a fowldyr funeral when they die... hoping that they too can be reborn as a fowldyr. These beliefs are a bit eccentric but who knows? Maybe they really can have their soul reshaped into a fowldyr one day.
