The wide variety of cultures and locales across Tyrth are mirrored in the cultivation of their fruits. Apples, in particular, showcase that range from their visuals, tastes, and even magical properties. They are a popular food, from the snack of a humble farmer to a fancy dessert filling for an extravagant noble.

Below are a selection of twenty-four different types of apple which can be found throughout the world:

Common Apples

Name: Meriadoc

Appearance: Forest green skin.

Further Information: This apple variety is one of the most common and is primarily used as a general eating apple. It has gained the nickname Merry as a shorthand.

Name: Crimsonhearth

Appearance: Fiery red skin.

Taste: Has a sharp tart taste uncooked, but mellows out.

Further Information: These apples are frequently used in baking and cooking, the name and skin colour reflecting the hearth where they belong.

Name: Jester Red

Appearance: Vibrant red skin.

Taste: Pre-fermentation, the apple tastes both tart and bitter.

Further Information: This variety is a popular apple used in ciders, named after the laughter from the folks who partake in the drink.

Further Information: This variety is intensely sweet, the most flavourful of these fruits can reduce even those with a stoic heart into tears.

Appearance: Pastel green skin.

Further Information: A commonplace general eating apple, Viridia’s more gentle floral flavour is favoured for those with a more sensitive taste palette.

Name: Red Devilish

Appearance: Bright red skin.

Further Information: This variety has a high level of spicy heat when consumed, making it commonly used in warming drinks over the cold seasons.

Name: Envy’s Reign

Appearance: Vivid emerald green skin.

Taste: Very sour flavour.

Further Information: This beautiful green apple, while it has a stunning appearance, has an obnoxious sour taste. It was named after an unpopular king from a very long time ago.

Name: Dual Delicious

Further Information: Both the looks and the taste of this apple are split right down the middle. It is often shared between lovers to symbolise the unification of two different halves to form a complete whole.

Further Information: Named after an infamous jester, this variety has a tendency to overripe and soften quickly. It has gained popularity with the common folk to throw at bad performers or those being punished in the pillory.

Name: Golden Ambrosia

Appearance: Yellow-Gold skin colour.

Taste: Sweet nectar like flavour.

Further Information: Viridith’s regional variety - This apple has been selectively bred for its appearance to mirror the famous golden roofs of the region’s capital city, Ambria.

Name: Balaur’s Bite

Appearance: Crimson ridged skin.

Taste: Sharp tang with smokey undertones.

Further Information: Farfathom’s regional variety - The skin of this apple variety is so tough, it is said that only the teeth of a balur can pierce through it to reach its tender inner flesh. However, the local blacksmiths are able to penetrate its resilient hide with their tools for a fee.

Name: Luscious Looms 

Appearance: Bright green skin, often found wrapped in ribbons.

Taste: Refreshingly sweet flavour.

Further Information: The Plains of Midoria’s regional variety - The trees for this variety line many of the pilgrimage routes towards Loom Lake. It is tradition that if you take one of the apples on your journey, you leave a ribbon on the tree in return.

Name: Mireheart

Appearance: Blotchy purple skin.

Taste: Medicinal bitter flavour.

Further Information: Maelmire’s regional variety - This apple has developed strong medical properties, mirroring its neighbouring flora. The flesh is used in concoctions to help reduce fevers, while the skin can aid against burns.

Name: Isidore

Appearance: Burnt orange skin.

Taste: Bright floral flavour.

Further Information: The Gyrelands’ regional variety - Named after a famous local inventor who helped spread efficient cultivator techniques across Tyrth. They also built contraptions which helped braced the trees from the high wind speeds of the region.

Name: Zephyrblush

Appearance: White skin with flushes of pink.

Taste: Light and airy, with a faint sweet flavour.

Further Information: Vale of Mythra’s regional variety - The apple trees which grow on the floating islands of this region partially gain its properties. The fruit is so light that they float gently while dropped. This in turn has meant that they are a common training tool for novice performers to practise their juggling skills.

Name: Silvershade

Appearance: Shiny silver skin.

Taste: A sharp tart flavour.

Further Information: Silverim’s regional variety - The skin of this apple variant is so naturally shiny that the eater can see their own reflection. Talented artists will incorporate this fruit into their pieces to show off their painting skills.

Name: Stone Soul

Appearance: Dull grey skin.

Taste: Dulled mild flavour.

Further Information: Starkend’s regional variety - Due to the high altitude and dry climate of the region, they are named after how hardy the tree and apples are to still thrive in these conditions.

Name: Oasisdew

Appearance: Teal skin.

Taste: Refreshing balanced taste, very juicy.

Further Information: Driftrun’s regional variety - These apple trees are found on the outer edges of the Eclipse Lakes and are a thirst quenching treat for those who travel across the deserts.

Rare Apples

Name: Dyrly Beloved

Appearance: Varied looks based on the original apple variety.

Taste: Varied taste based on the original apple variety, but tends to have a more intense flavour.

Further Information: This variety has a chance to be formed when a normal apple tree has been exposed to high levels of mana over a long period of time, similar to balaurite. Both the tree and fruit keep their original traits but have been enhanced. The apples themselves are infused with a bit of mana, making them a favourite of fowldyr who get a little boost of magical energy after eating one.

Name: Midnight Prince

Appearance: The outer skin is a dark blue colour similar to a blueberry and is adorned with light speckles, which look like stars in the sky. The inner flesh in comparison is a pale white.

Taste: A fresh, cooling, crisp flavour, with a hint of mint.

Further Information: These rare apples have been found in Tyrth for a very long time, originally named after one of The Old Gods. Stories have been passed down that whenever a feline Old God rests underneath an apple tree, there is a chance that they bless the fruit with the peace of the night sky. This act ends up transforming the fruit on the tree into the Midnight Prince variety.

Name: Sweet Sojourners

Appearance: Mix of red and green, depending on the tree. They also tend to be a lot larger than the average apple.

Taste: Varied sweetness levels depending on the fruit and how long it has been growing on the tree.

Further Information: The trees for this apple have a chance to grow on the backs of Âldslachs - gentle roaming giants which roam Tyrth. This variety is impossible to cultivate and, due to the nature of the tree’s host, are very tricky to harvest. This has led to the fruit commanding a high price via auctions. One does not want to be on the bad side of an Âldslach, but there are desperate people who would take the risk of a lifetime grudge for vast wealth.

Name: Nonna’s Gift

Appearance: Rustic red skin.

Taste: Pleasant mild sweetness, with a warming flavour note.

Further Information: One of the rarest of the apple varieties since they only grow on a single tree. Over the centuries, this specific tree has become enchanted through the magical energy of offerings and charms from both a fowldyr whose vessel was carved from one of its branches and the local townsfolk. A regional festival is hosted every year during the harvest led by that fowldyr, in honour of the tree which he treats as a cherished grandmother.
