Bestiary Entry by Stasanie & Flame Interpretations by Rose

Augyr are legendary creatures that appear all over Tyrth as unmoving headless statues, but there are reports of folks seeing them moving on their own with an ethereal skull head floating above their severed necks. The legend goes that seeing an Augyr's skull is an omen, and the colour of the flames is how you are meant to divine your fate.

There are many reasons why an Augyr may reveal its skull to you. When an individual finds themselves in need of guidance, when a mind is wracked with turmoil, or even a warning for those who have a significant event on their horizon. Augyr are like a divine tarot card reading, appearing before someone in need of a sign… regardless of whether they are seeking it or not.

Augyr only come to life to deliver portents, so you will never see these creatures taking a casual stroll, and many folks will go their entire lives without seeing the flaming skull of these creatures. Despite that, folks do look upon the statues with eerie reverence… and the tales about the Augyr are widely believed because the statues are never in the same place for long. A statue you see every day on the temple grounds will suddenly show up on the other side of the village. With the statue suddenly appearing in a different location, everyone will know an omen has been given… but to whom? And what colour flames did they see? Whisper always stir when an Augyr changes locations.

There are scholars who have devoted their lives to decoding the flames of the Augyr to better understand the message these legendary creatures are trying to convey. After centuries of gathering accounts and stories about the Augyr, the people of the realm were able to assemble a chart for translating the flame colours.

Crimson Flames

This colour is associated with high energy which can be sorted into two categories: conflict and passion. Conflict is where your interpretations involving strength and aggression would be, and passion leans more towards ambition and strengthening bonds. The crimson flames are fertile ground for potential misinterpretations with them being similar and certain omens having overlap - like betrayal could be with an entire region or a lover.

Orange Flames

This colour is associated with creativity, courage and vitality. It champions the realm of ideas, inspiration, and taking the action needed to follow through. However, this flame colour can boil over from courage into arrogance.

Yellow Flames

This flame is seen as an uplifting and positive colour, and is linked to happiness and positive outcomes. It also leans towards intellect, mental power and being able to find solutions to problems.

Emerald Flames

The emerald flames are associated with nature so there is an abundance of meanings associated with growth, harvest, and fertility. This flame can be viewed as sign about the land itself and also about individuals - especially when the green flames are a warning about greed and envy.

Turquoise Flames

The turquoise flames can appear in shades of cyan, teal, and light blue and are associated with the element of air. This flame colour is associated with calmness and positivity, and focuses on guidance of the mind and emotions.

Indigo Flames

These deep blue flames are associated with wisdom, spirituality, and knowledge. Indigo assists with the perception of things that are beyond ordinary sight. This colour is also associated with water - both its depths and its dangers.

Violet Flames

This colour has quite a range of interpretations but is often associated with magic and mystery, as well as luxury and rarity.

White Flames

The white flames and black flames are considered the most balanced of all of the omens. They each have an equal amount of positive and negative associations, and are thought to be the yin and yang of the flame spectrum. While the white flames can represent virtue and new beginnings, the brightness of the white flames can also represent being blind to the things that are clearly right in front of you - or simply not caring. The white flames are both the divine glow of hope but also the sterile and cold shade of apathy.

Black Flames

While the black flames can be a foreboding shade to behold due to their associations with death and loss, it is also a shade of tranquility and deep reflection - like the perfectly flat surface of a lake reflecting the night sky. Unlike the bright flames of the previous entries which rally and stir up fervor, the black flames are both solemn and calm… an omen of mourning, rest, recovery, and acceptance.
